Facebook Google Android: military uses

The choice of license very permissive Apache 2.0 Google Android was intentional: it was to allow the widest use system as possible without imposing any real constraint to those who adopt it. They may in particular make owner: changes should not necessarily be returned to the community as required by the licenses "viral" GPL type.

The goal: to better serve strategy of "hegemony" slow Google to have adopting the broader market,

So we had a port netbook then PC (fairly predictable), then microwave oven and washing machine before reaching television and cars.

is happening today in an area that was certainly not in the plans: Raython, the U.S. military manufacturer, announces today that it is testing applications and hardware to equip the soldier Android on the battlefield in order to:
  • provide access to live satellite images of the Patriot system anti.missiles to locate the best enemies. It would be up to recognize faces or read license plates in urban guerrillas
  • to announce the detection of enemies and their location in the theater of operation: a kind of Latitude profit but rather anti-social ...
blinkered Access to the source code and the license chosen by Google is clearly the catalyst for these applications, the manufacturer saves tens of millions of dollars on software development but is taking no chances of survival as it is in full owner Heritage programs used. One of joys of Open Source ....
This is also another example of a trend that materializes increasingly in recent years: a reverse flow of innovation. Before, it was the first soldier who innovated with its abundant funds, the industrial world then resumed its products for its own purposes before putting them in the consumer world. Now it seems that this trend is reversed more often : just look at the number of technologies and services used by the company that emerged in the consumer world!

Facebook cap of half a billion active users exceeded! Home

Mark Zuckerberg, Facebook founder and ceo, announced that its social network just passed its half-billion users assets.

He is humble figure, saying that what is ultimately important is the improvement made by his service in our lives (...) rather than these numbers staggering. Besides, Facebook opens a new page (geo-located) to tell these stories (...) from around the world.

Finally. the leading social network continues its triumphant progress ( +100% in 1 year despite a colossal scale already) although its business model requires it to flirt continuously with the boundaries of privacy to maximize its advertising revenues. Business " Beacon" and "Like Button" does not seem to have begun its success or its capital trust! unless the prevailing ignorance on these subjects do not display ...

technology illuminates the secrets of the "sfumato "Da Vinci

The great father of the "Mona Lisa" has continued to experiment with new techniques throughout his career. So says a study of C2RMF on works in the Louvre.
The perfection of the art of Leonardo da Vinci painting has always fascinated him, especially his famous "sfumato" that softens the contours and landscapes of the envelope slightly mist. If the Florentine artist has exhibited some of his theories in his "Treatise on Painting," however we know little about how it worked in practice. Hence the idea of researchers at the Centre for Research and Restoration of Museums of France (C2RMF) to enjoy their neighborhood with the Louvre, which has one of the finest collections of paintings by the artist, to try to discover some of the recipes for making "the painter using the most modern scientific tools, combined with the study of ancient texts. ion of the art of Leonardo da Vinci painting has always fascinated him, particularly his famous "Sfumato" that softens the contours of the landscape envelope and a light mist. The C2RMF into a black hole

Shell vide.Le Louvre dream recover square feet currently occupied by the C2RMF underground Carrousel. Hence the idea of moving it to Cergy-Pontoise, since it seems to be the location finally chosen by Mitterrand to store reserves of Paris museums. But what will become of the particle accelerator in the Louvre, Aglae, dedicated to research on works of art, including installation cost 43 million euros? Its exploitation by the CNRS team led by Philippe Walter, a chemist art enthusiast, has the reputation of C2RMF whose expertise is sought by many museums abroad. Nothing is definitely settled in this cacophony where multiple political actors (Louvre, Department of Culture, University of Cergy-Pontoise ...) play their own music. One thing is certain in any case, after the departure of the Director of C2RMF now ship without a captain, Philippe Walter, who, to his great regret, will leave his team to Jussieu. C2RMF risks being an empty shell soon.

The mystery of the Mona Lisa smile gradually unveiled

The smile of the Mona Lisa, the famous painting by Leonardo da Vinci, is now informed by new technologies. Researchers at the Laboratory Centre for Research and Restoration of Museums of France, located at the Musée du Louvre, have highlighted the technical innovations of the painter and inventor, Italian (1452-1519). They are particularly interested in portraits attributed to Leonardo da Vinci can be admired at the Louvre in Paris.

Firefox for iPhone & iPad: centralized management of my urls between PCs and iPhone / iPad Firefox Weave

The first iPhone application called the Mozilla Firefox Home "has just been approved by Apple while war still rages on the forehead browsers between Apple's Safari browser and Mozilla Firefox.

This first application could not be a direct port of Firefox: it would have had the same fate as other applications rejected by Apple because (sometimes hidden ...) too direct competition with Apple application corresponding , by Apple's Mobile Safari originally installed on the iPhone. Opera Mini has already had bitter experience ! This is of course for the firm of Steve Jobs protect up the market for platform iad Apple derived from redemption of Quattro Wireless.

So Firefox - because it's still nice to him it is - getting on the Apple Appstore by a circuitous route: the ubiquitous access to their favorite URLs stored by the service Weave.

I mentioned Firefox Weave: it allows me to find in my Firefox 3 (professional laptop, laptop and desktop personal family) my Important Links usual 400 or stored as bookmarks synchronized and inter-machine through the servers by adding the Mozilla add-on suitable . Easy access to "information capital" since I missed my iPhone when I need to access quickly a page usually in a mobile situation.

The gap is filled in: I just installed Firefox Home from the App Store of Apple and I now have access to these 400 URLs classified as strictly identical to that of Firefox. The search function by keywords is also very useful to avoid shipping.

When it selects a hyperlink, it is loaded into the web browser component of the iPhone SDK also used by Safari: A true sign of goodwill on the part of Mozilla ... unless this is a sign of patience before returning to the load on Firefox itself in its mobile version when the voltage is a little fallout.

I also tested on the iPad: this also works the same way by the compatibility mode between iPhone and iPad.

By cons, large current fault: it is the iPhone compatibility mode: therefore, one must choose between two bad solutions: a clear view at 25% size Screen iPad or a crazy display to 100%. Mr

Mozilla must now push the job to the end and we make a native version iPad!

When it comes, it will reduce my skepticism over iPad allowing me to increase my passive consumption of web content. I do not like the keyboard-screen iPad: Ipad version, I can surf from my couch on my usual sites have almost no need to use it!

How To Unlock Mailbox Nortel

App for Android Inventor: after the UGC, UGA Google Launches!

At the beginning of Web 2.0, it was the UGC (User Generated Content ") this concept by which all our role has changed: we have mutated from passive consumers of digital pages published by traditional publishing producing assets in our own content to our destination peer .

Well, with the launch of Google App Inventor for Android, Google is proposing the same mutation users of mobile phones Android: they can become a developer.

one may speak of UGAs (User Generated Applications) by analogy to the UGC. This is not unlike the dream Permanent (marked for example by the Hypercard launched by Apple in 1987 ) to allow the user himself to satisfy his own needs in application without having to resort to those ugly Jojos computer scientists ....

the NYT article today is clearly in this sense: a system launched by Google originally laid in the school environment, applications written by non-computer (primary school students, nurse etc.).

So the Android mode DYI (Do It Yourself): see tutorials shown by Korben to be convinced.

is naturally in Google's strategy around Android diametrically opposed to that niche Apple : based on a maximum strength to make its platform dominates outrageously on the 4 "main tools" of our daily lives it will soon occupy.

The downside to this opening up: a call for applications to the foot of lesser quality to spam. The task of the Android Market will find it complicated to separate the wheat from the chaff ... unless it allows him to finally overwhelm the alternative Android Market ( listed here) that would run out of search technologies relevant , cleaning out spam, etc.. are at the heart of strategic business Google and its success in doing s. Inventor

App for Android is launched today: we'll have to wait a bit to see what he finally produced ....

The most fun would that do emerge in the firmament of the best applications for developments involving school "seedy" area pros.

There is nevertheless unlikely: applications to great success and high impact (Mapping, routing, research, augmented reality, etc..) Are those that involve large data infrastructures, processing "the cloud" where the mobile phone becomes an interface customization and enrichment these "big lifts" that, it remains - even today - beyond the reach of even discerning hobbyist developer time wasted.

But for how long?

Can You Keep A Platypus As A Pet?

Apprentices destroyers!

On 1 July, our former director was in his former office. Likely to welcome the new director. Use in good way or finish the job? Criminals always return to the scene of the crime! We wanted to trust Ms. Naffah. After five years, it is clear that the result is catastrophic, unmotivated staff, the service ... manhandled.
Nobody knows what you do and what our missions, and cherry on the cake, everyone takes care of us without contact us. At every official report, we propose to develop what already exists here. It explains the learnedly he must meet an art historian, the conservator and scientist around the work, sometimes we're fools for not having practiced for years. They seem to make great discoveries and we must follow in Cergy to see the miracle happen. Except that these are not miracles, but the methods developed by Daily agents and C2RMF LRMH. This misunderstanding of the role of LRMH of C2RMF and their concrete contribution to the knowledge of wealth proves that, despite their claims, some curators and senior officials of the ministry contrefichent much work we do.
In its engagement letter dated 21 June 2010, the Minister of Culture encourages the Director of the INP to develop doctoral programs and for curators restorers in cooperation with the Ministry of Higher Education. However, weakening the research within the C2RMF, the department denies the expertise in research training, that could bring C2RMF in the field of restoration and conservation.
Having tried to impose their approach to all stakeholders and the Department of the CNRS, the Museum Service and the administration of the Louvre are the responsibility of starting CNRS. They claim to have the support of policies, while trade-offs do not
are all rendered. The silence of policies is linked to ignorance of the file.
Is this irony than to observe that Mr. Loyrette itself as "the principal payer and designated pilot [of the site reserves]" in Liberation, three days after weeping misery in the world?
We know that will close the CNRS UMR 171 31 December 2011 and create a new unit of Heritage Research in Paris-VI. Led by a Philippe Walter never listened to by the leadership of the department nor the museum director of the Louvre, but with a considerable weight at the CNRS and the Ministry of Research, this new unit will soon overshadow at C2RMF, especially if it ends up cutting the Louvre in Cergy. They must admit that if no agent culture does go in Cergy, their project was stillborn. The CMC will have trouble convincing the CNRS to invest in the two parallel structures knowing that the current trend is to budget cuts. This situation can only be detrimental to the heritage research
and lead an unhealthy climate full of mistrust. Moreover, it appears that the project be delayed Cergy two years in these times of budgetary sacrifices. The result: a weakened C2RMF, a departure from the CNRS document to December 31, 2011, a loss of resources and specialists ... What a mess!
We must develop another strategy with the new direction. We have no choice. We're not out of the woods. The new director of C2RMF has not yet made his position but it participates, already, in the capacity, the working group of the CMC, the CNRS, and LRMH C2RMF not forget Mrs. Labourdette, Vice President University of Cergy, and of course the Louvre. This working group met again yesterday in discreetly.
The decision to move, imposed by the Director of Museums of France and Mr. Loyerette, was supported by the former director of C2RMF in serat it the same with the new director?
In the current climate, positioning clear and quick on his part is necessary. No sooner had his appointment, we requested a meeting at the DGP office, SMF, the Louvre to discuss the future of C2RMF in the presence of the new guideline. To prepare for this meeting, colleagues should tell us their feelings on key issues:

- What are our concrete contribution to policy research, restoration and conservation of heritage?
- What is our appreciation for the history of art and the general public?
- What are the benefits of the current location of C2RMF?
- What CNRS brings to our work and our expertise?
- And of course other issues specific to your business ...

To go further, this argument should lead to the creation of a manifesto that we will release that officers C2RMF present their visions and missions on their trades .

How To Give Black Hair A Messy Look

Reserves museums and controversial disorder

Conservation. Alarming report, choice of Cergy challenged by Frederic Mitterrand, researchers worried ...

The major project around the museum storage water does it take before the first sod? In any case, it is severely shaken. It is to find a place for the reserves, stored at great expense in the dust of furniture since they were moved basements for fear of floods of the Seine.

The Louvre has been responsible for resolving the problem, thanks to the millions of Abu Dhabi. Commissioned to monitor the case, Vincent Pomarède presented May 2 a summary "Confidential," where he is alarmed by "administrative rigidities" and demand answers of "emergency". In these hundred pages, it suggests an overall policy. "Depression of Trade," "lack of policy national preventive conservation, delay in digitization, inadequate laws - not to mention the feudal wars and disorder reigning in the spheres - the lead to warn: conservation, restoration and research heritage "are not insured for the next twenty years. Aquasar: the hot water supercomputer IBM

worry, we do not yet speak of replacing the electricity as "fuel" but cooling. IBM is announcing the delivery of the Aquasar first water-cooled computer (tap) at a rate of 30 liters per minute.

The best heat capacities of water (compared to air) makes a computer very green (ecological): it consumes 40% less total energy: most of the energy needed for such a machine is often used in the cooling system for its COOL. In addition, the heated water is used to heat nearby buildings, which further improves the carbon footprint

In live in hard, it makes this almost as close to the domestic plumbing, right?

The system has delivered a performance of 6 petaflops (what is a petaflop ? ): it puts far Top500 World Aquasar but is the leading global energy with 450 megaflops per watt of electricity consumed: the Ferrari to 500 are much less good at it ....

After Google has justified its side Green IT ( Carbon 1km by car = than 1,000 research ) despite its 2 million servers is IBM pushes a computer cleaner. The Initiative Climate Savers Computing already mentioned is not a dead letter!

21st Birthday Event Title On Facebook

5 billion mobile phone subscribers at end-2010

There will be 5 billion subscribers to mobile telephone systems planets at the end of this year according to ABI Research . The total population will approach 6.9 to then humans. We will have a connection rate of 72.5%. This is progress of 12% in 18 months : impressive when talking about the entire planet!

In fact, to be a little more precise, we must speak 5 billion subscriptions because there are smart kids with multiple subscriptions (3G USB keys, etc. ..) or beverage vending connected by their central GSM . But this is still a "rounding error".

This increased mobile connectivity of the planet is driven by developing countries:
  • Africa grows annually by 22%
  • mobile penetration in the Asia-Pacific region has reached 65% at the end of year with countries such as Indonesia or India, which together add 150 million subscribers by an actuellement

Quand le smartphone actuel ne le sera plus (smart) parce qu'il sera in the hands of Mr Everybody then the machine "creative destruction" of value Google Android has been running full for the second Internet media advertising on this Earth ( is planned for 2015) which we bet that the firm will appropriate Mountain then still the lion's share !

iPad "eaten" by the new release "Free Preview" of Wired?

A question for you, dear readers:

I work in the media world. I am what is done:
  • I bought the June edition of Wired magazine, which is for me the textbook case of what is currently the best in digital playback ("eReading)
  • this morning, the App Store offers me an update of the application Wired supposed to separate the content (the editions of the magazine) of container (the reading application developed by Wired in collaboration with Adobe.
result, the new version destroyed the old one, so I lost my purchase! I do not have that a "Free Preview" with some excerpts pitiful!

Other than I have experienced this same problem they (youth) Thanks in advance for feedback in your comments.
